Netflix has done it again with yet another impressive original series, released only earlier this month on September 17th. It is the first Korean Drama to remain at the number one spot on Netflix for two days consecutively all around the world according to its charts, and today still remains in the top ten.
Squid Game is a South Korean Drama series, only nine episodes long about survival.
You may be thinking what’s so special about that, there have been plenty of shows about survival? Well there’s a catch, as players compete for a whopping 45.6 Billion Won prize, all players have something on the line, family, debt, and after joining the games, their lives.
Now the cast of this series is equally as impressive as it’s ranking with actors such as Gong Yoo known worldwide for his performance in Train to Busan (2016), newcomer HoYeon Jung who Vogue has noted as one of South Korea’s next top models.
But it isn’t only it’s cast members that are making this show trend on Twitter, and start challenges on TikTok. It is the mystery behind the plot. With each episode leaving you gutted and wanting more. It is addicting, you can’t help but want to know what will happen next.

It’s worth mentioning that it’s writing is reminiscent of what’s come before it, think of other popular movies such as Ariel Schuman’s Nerve (2016), Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games series, or even of James Dashner’s The Maze Runner.
Yet Squid Game feels much more intense and mature in comparison to the other books and movies. The recipe lies in that it is bingable and thoroughly enjoyable if you can get past the gruesome details, themes, and unexpected heartache.
What I also enjoyed about this series is its length, with almost every episode hitting the one hour mark it makes for an easy watch with a grand total of 8.83 hours.
Nowadays I feel shows can get too long causing a loss in viewership. People want to be able to go home and turn on something quick after school or a long day at work. They want to watch things without having to commit to something that’s several seasons long, for example Game of Thrones which has eight seasons. Many people are off put simply because of its length and thus won’t even give the series a try.
Speaking of Game Of Thrones, let's talk about season finales and final episodes. What Squid Game does well is give you a finale you can’t be mad at. Sure we’re left off with a cliff hanger and have no clue what the winner of the games is going to do (no spoilers here!) but it doesn’t feel rushed or “wrong” like the ending of Game of Thrones. Contrary to it’s ending that received backlash and negative reviews Squid Game seems to be liked by most people, check out USA Today's article on the hit show: https://www.usatoday.com/story/entertainment/tv/2021/10/01/squid-game-review-why-people-obsessed-south-korean-horror-show/5946819001/
Watch this now, I promise you won't regret it, but a word of caution, whatever you think you know, you don’t.
